Leiden’s Archaeology master’s programmes are the broadest programmes of their kind in the Netherlands. Leiden is the only place in the Netherlands that has an independent Faculty of Archaeology. The Faculty consistently ranks in the global top 10 in the QS World University Ranking.
The programme offers various specialisations and regional focus areas. You may choose to focus on regions like Europe, the the Mediterranean and West Asia or the Americas. The teaching programme is closely linked to ongoing, state-of-the-art research. Our academic staff are involved in research all over the world, with a strong focus on field research. In addition, the programme emphasises ecology and geology, combined with both iconology and historical studies, as well as ethno-archaeological, anthropological and experimental approaches. The possible combination with modern museum practices and developments of archaeological heritage management broadens the scope even more.

Faculty of Humanities

In this era of globalisation, humanities are more important than ever. Migration, integration, trade, and technology are blurring the borders between countries and cultures. To be able to cooperate and live together, it is crucial that we understand each other. Humanities offer the insights we need to do this.
The Faculty of Humanities in Leiden is unique in its breadth of languages, cultures, arts and societies of the world, in their historic context, from prehistory to the present. We offer a challenging and international study environment in which research and education are closely intertwined. The master’s programmes we offer are often small-scale and we provide room for customisations such as personal learning trajectories.
Humanities research and education at Leiden are among the top 30 in the world (THE).

Faculty of Law

With its international focus and roots going far back in the Dutch legal order, the faculty has helped to train many generations of legal professionals for key positions within a society governed by the rule of law. The research of the faculty is not restricted to just one core issue, but aims at excellent cutting-edge research across the full breadth of law. Each year more than 1,000 Bachelor students choose to study Law, Notarial Law, Tax Law or Criminology here. Besides these students, around 600 to 700 international students come to our law school: ranging from exchange students who are here to study for one semester in Leiden, to students who have completed their undergraduate studies and have been selected for one of our (advanced) Master’s programmes. These figures say a lot about the scale of our law school. But they also demonstrate the attraction our law school has for talented legal professionals and criminologists – both at home and abroad.
