During this three-year master’s programme, students learn how to cure patients, prevent diseases and develop a critical scientific view. A large part of this programme consists of internships in the LUMC or regional hospitals. The third year of the master offers students different clinical and scientific internships of their choice. This enables students to focus on their specific interests and their future career.

Career

Most medical doctors from Leiden University pursue a residency programme that prepares for a career in a specific medical specialty.  A residency programme means working and learning at the same time and can take two to eight years, depending on the specialty. Another option is to pursue a PhD. This means you will be conducting research at a university or university hospital for a maximum of four years, while being trained as an independent researcher. After obtaining a PhD degree, most graduates apply for a residency programme position for a specific medical specialty. Alternatively, you can work as a researcher, as a non-specialised doctor, or in the pharmaceutical industry.
