The Hague
City of Peace, Justice and Security

Students who come to The Hague to study want to make a difference. This is the place where you can realise your ambitions – for your own future and for a better world. The Hague proudly claims the title of ‘the international city of peace, justice and security'.’. It is the seat of government, home to the Dutch monarchy, NATO, the International Criminal Court, embassies and consulates from around the world, plus hundreds of organisations, multinational companies, knowledge centres and think tanks. And, of course, our The Hague campus is situated right in the centre of the city. Here you'll find all kinds of student facilities, because with more than 30,000 students spread across various (higher) education institutions, The Hague is a true student city.

International environment

The Hague unites countries from all across the globe and is deeply involved in building a safe and just world, with the impressive, world-famous Peace Palace at the centre of it all. It is the perfect environment to encourage dialogue and debate. You can attend guest lectures by highly respected experts or intern at one of the many institutions that help to shape our world – all right in your own backyard!

A coffee with the prime minister

The Hague is home to both the government of the Netherlands and the King, so don’t be surprised if you find our prime minister sitting next to you while you’re having a cappuccino. If you pass by Noordeinde Palace, you can see if the King is working. Just don’t expect him there during the biggest celebration of the year, King’s Day. Prepare to dress in orange and celebrate with the Dutch on this day, the king’s birthday!

Feels like home

In the video series Feels like home, students talk to each other about their favourite spots in the student cities of Leiden and The Hague.

Discover Sasha's and Jaydey's favourite places

Sasha was born and raised in this city behind the dunes. She takes Jaydey to her favourite place, namely the Lange Voorhout, where you can admire Escher in The Palace and Hotel Des Indes. The regal and stately nature of Lange Voorhout is certainly reflected in the Plein, Jaydey's favourite location. It's always buzzing here and not only the Inner Court is just around the corner, but also his favourite Irish Pub.

My fascination for science partly comes from my father, who was a scientist himself and always gave me interesting books and articles to read. That is why Physics was the right programme for me. After finishing my bachelor's programme, I am now enrolled in the master's programme's specialisation: Biological and Soft Matter Physics. It is a tough study to do and you need to spend a lot of time studying, but that never held me back socially. If you plan things well, you can do plenty of stuff besides studying.

Recently, I came to the realisation that I want to share my passion for Physics with others and become a teacher. After my graduation, I will pursue the Educational Module at ICLON (Leiden University Graduate School of Teaching) to obtain the teaching qualification I require. I would love to show students how Physics is all around us and how much it can teach us about the world. Formulas are really interesting, once you understand how they work.
