How do countries collaborate to impact climate change? How does inequality affect life expectancy? How can diplomacy help reduce international conflict? These types of questions revolve around Global Challenges and are central to the programme at Leiden University College.
A Liberal Arts & Sciences education like this prepares you to deal with complex and interdisciplinary topics. Rather than focusing on a single academic field, you will gain broad knowledge from the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities before you pick an area of interest to study in depth: your major.
In the first year, you follow courses to become familiarized with Global Challenges: what they are, what makes them complicated, and how they affect diverse communities around the globe and locally.
In addition, you will follow a few courses to lay a strong academic foundation, such as statistics and academic writing, and supplement this with 3 electives: courses which are completely your choice. At the end of year one, you choose a specialization (major), from the following six options:
Housing in the LUC building in the center of The Hague is guaranteed for the first two years of your studies. If you choose to live on campus, you will have a studio apartment with your own bathroom and kitchen, and share a common room on your floor. Living together greatly enhances the community feeling in the college and contributes to learning from others outside the class room.
At Leiden University College, you’ll find a range of different extracurricular activities and traditions to take part in, such as the pantomime, a sports tournament with all Dutch university colleges or Model United Nations. Joining LUC means joining an inspiring and close-knit community of motivated students from all around the world.
Each year, LUC admits 200 talented students from the Netherlands and abroad. You will study together in small classes of max 22 students, where there is lots of room for discussion and interaction. We have two application deadlines: 1 December (Early bird) or 15 March (Regular). Check our website for a full overview of admission procedures & requirements and upcoming experience days.
