Overview of master’s programmes

Leiden University combines excellence and opportunities in 80 master’s programmes and nearly 200 specialisations.

These programmes cover nearly all academic disciplines, ranging from natural science to law, from language and literature to medicine, and from social science to philosophy, and are taught by faculties with a national and international reputation for teaching and research.

Faculty of Archaeology

Leiden’s Archaeology master’s programmes are the broadest programmes of their kind in the Netherlands. Leiden is the only place in the Netherlands that has an independent Faculty of Archaeology. The Faculty consistently ranks in the global top 10 in the QS World University Ranking.
The programme offers various specialisations and regional focus areas. You may choose to focus on regions like Europe, the the Mediterranean and West Asia or the Americas. The teaching programme is closely linked to ongoing, state-of-the-art research. Our academic staff are involved in research all over the world, with a strong focus on field research. In addition, the programme emphasises ecology and geology, combined with both iconology and historical studies, as well as ethno-archaeological, anthropological and experimental approaches. The possible combination with modern museum practices and developments of archaeological heritage management broadens the scope even more.

Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs

The Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs (FGGA) is an internationally recognised academic hub that addresses today’s most pressing global and societal challenges through the interconnected fields of governance, security, politics, law, sociology and economics.

Located in The Hague, the international city of peace and justice, FGGA combines interdisciplinary research and education with strong connections to governments, international organisations, NGOs and industry partners.

Our master’s programmes prepare students to understand and address contemporary issues in areas such as diplomacy, international relations, crisis and security management, cybersecurity, public affairs, intelligence and public administration. Through academically challenging and socially relevant education, students develop the analytical knowledge and professional skills needed to contribute to an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world.

Faculty of Humanities

In this era of globalisation, humanities are more important than ever. Migration, integration, trade, and technology are blurring the borders between countries and cultures. To be able to cooperate and live together, it is crucial that we understand each other. Humanities offer the insights we need to do this.
The Faculty of Humanities in Leiden is unique in its breadth of languages, cultures, arts and societies of the world, in their historic context, from prehistory to the present. We offer a challenging and international study environment in which research and education are closely intertwined. The master’s programmes we offer are often small-scale and we provide room for customisations such as personal learning trajectories.
Humanities research and education at Leiden are among the top 30 in the world (THE).

Faculty of Law

With its international focus and historical roots as the first law school in the Netherlands, Leiden Law School has helped to train many generations of legal professionals. Our faculty’s research is not restricted to just one focus area. We conduct cutting-edge research across the full breadth of the law. Each year, more than 1000 bachelor’s students choose to come to Leiden Law School to study Law, Notarial Law, Tax Law or Criminology. We also welcome around 600 to 700 international students, including exchange students coming to study for one semester, as well as students who have completed their undergraduate studies and have been selected for one of our regular master’s or advanced master’s programmes. Not only do these figures reflect the sheer scale of Leiden Law School. They also demonstrate the attraction of our degree programmes for talented legal professionals and criminologists – from both home and abroad.

The research activities are organised in eight institutes. These institutes offer thirteen English taught master’s programmes.

Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences

At the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, anthropologists, psychologists, political scientists, education and child development experts, and experts in scientific research studies are increasing our understanding of human behaviour; in society, between people, and within ourselves. With modern research methods, these disciplines are developing fast, and interdisciplinary research is helping to provide answers to social issues combined with the personal and psychological dimensions that shape them. The faculty offers seven master's programmes in behaviour and society, two of which are research masters.
